Job Description:

Today, we have 21 campuses which are enhancing the lives of low-income seniors, youth, and families.

The Academic Counselor will assist current youth and youth adult students in setting educational goals, exploring alternatives, making decisions regarding their academic programs. These services are provided by counseling participants through individual and group counseling and advisement, short-term classes, workshops, reference materials, referrals to resources on or off MNC, and using testing tools. The incumbent will teach basic skills to students with varying academic levels while integrating GED skills, reading and math skills, social justice and community issues, and culture.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities

  • Provide current and prospective MNC Youth Services students personal counseling, career development, and assessment for individuals or groups.
  • Help students study and prepare for the GED exam, and assess their readiness, Instructing students in basic skills like math, science, English, and literature.
  • Will supervise ESL (English as a Second Language) Instructor and support in curriculum, teaching and outreach for the ESL program
  • Provide academic advising about the College’s occupational and vocational programs, and programs which prepare students to graduate and transfer.
  • Helps students meet necessary goals and qualify to get a GED.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, e.g. coordinating programs or activities, initiating new services, leading workgroups and presentations.
  • Assist students with the following appeal processes and waiver: Financial aid, enrollment priority, remedial coursework, probation and course repetition.
  • Working with students to create learning plans that meet their needs
  • Gathering and analyzing data to identify barriers to graduation and factors that negatively affect academic performance.
  • Working with faculty, school counselors, and administrators to develop classroom strategies and support students.
  • Will support, guide and approve curriculums from Youth Services programming; afterschool, summer camp, in school group facilitation, cohort sessions, and workshops
  • Providing short-term counseling services and supporting the site staff in meeting students' social, emotional, and educational needs.
  • Being a point of contact for families and helping to coordinate efforts to accommodate students with disabilities and special needs.
  • Analyze student performance to provide guidance and identify potential problems.
  • In conjunction with Education Staff & volunteers, effectively apply for grants and coordinate to meet requirements of various grants; and maintain compliance.
  • Responsible for tracking, collecting, documenting, and reporting for participant files, statistics, written procedures and related documentation requirements; maintains current records for timely response to desk audits and general file reviews.
  • Seeks and establishes relationships and effective communications and partnerships with community agencies, governmental/health organizations, educational institutions, and local civic/business organizations; serves as department liaison.
  • In conjunction with Program Manager and in conjunction with MNC administration, coordinates communication & marketing efforts for GED Program (social media accounts, website content, community newsletter, etc.
  • Performs marketing and outreach activities to encourage participation through effective communications and the dissemination of publicity and promotional materials.
  • In collaboration with the Deputy CPO, attend funders and collaborative meetings discussing relevant topics related to Youth Education programs as assigned, to stay abreast with changes within City departments that affect our communities and to further align MNC programs with community needs and city objectives.
  • Support in developing and implementing tools and other methods to continuously improve quality, efficiency, and customer experience in MNC Education Services.
  • Prepare program specific reports as needed for agency leadership, including Board of Directors.
  • Assist in special projects, activities and events as requested.

Position Qualification Requirements

Education: A bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or a related field, and preferably a master's degree.

Experience: Experience in academic advising or counseling, and preferably experience in higher education and with student retention and success initiatives.

Requirement:

  • Current CA Driver’s License, current auto insurance, and a clean driving record.
  • Bilingual/bicultural in SpanishSkills and Abilities:
  • Personality - Independent thinker, possess excellent customer service skills, professional attitude, a high level of personal integrity, maturity, and business judgment required.
  • Performance - Able to multi-task, prioritize task, meet deadlines, able to do presentations and to maintain confident information. Strong analytical skills and demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Communication - Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be a well-organized professional who thrives in a team-oriented environment.
  • Stress Management - Ability to remain tactful under pressure and present a professional demeanor and communication style with co-workers in a multicultural setting.

Software: Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer.

Decision Making: Set priorities and standards of performance; Develop plans by which work can be accomplished.

Tools and Equipment: Standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Confidential and Sensitive Information: Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality when dealing with client information.
